Thanks everyone!
My familiarity with Dr. Who ended with the old ’70s/’80s version, starring the curly haired guy with the really long scarf. Mix that in with me never having read any of the Harry Potter books, and you have my starting point!
Sketch 1
After some wikipedia browsing, I did this sketch. I liked the idea of the goofy scarf flying in the wind (even though I drew his scarf hanging lazily, here). I also planned on doing a Poppins-esque London cityscape, including London Bridge and Big Ben, with a nice cloudy moon. THAT idea went away quickly…
Speaking of going away quickly… The other characters flying on broomsticks in this sketch are Keith Moon and Pete Townshend, left over from my initial initial idea of adding another layer of mash-up: Dr. Who/The Who/Harry Potter.
Sketches 2 & 3
Still in Idea Mode, this is a sketch of Dr. Who reading a copy of Harry Potter on the toilet…
and one of him falling asleep while reading on a plane. The toilet one was very close, but I liked the flying and the scarf, so I decided to go with #1
Process
I draw on a small Wacom Cintiq, using Autodesk Sketchbook Pro. I like drawing digitally because it’s not permanent and I can alternate between using white and black to define shapes, almost like painting. And, I don’t have to scan anything.
